This journey takes you through the unique history of the Imazighen of Tunisia! The Imazighen are the indigenous people of North Africa and makeup approximately one percent of Tunisia’s population. Primarily ignored for years, their community has seen a recent resurgence of their traditions and cultural heritage.

On this tour, you will visit several Imazighen villages. Many of these locations were built on mountaintops or underground as protection. Several are shooting locations for the Star Wars movies. You’ll also experience their tasty cuisine, intricate crafts, ancient culture, and unique Imazighen architecture. End this excursion with a relaxing trip to the beautiful Djerba Island.

Day 1

Welcome to Tunisia! Upon arrival at Tunisia-Carthage International Airport (TUN), you will meet a representative of the Off Season Adventures team and head to your hotel in Hammamet. The afternoon is at your leisure to relax, explore the city, and contemplate the journey ahead!

Day 2

Today set out for the nearly abandoned village of Takrouna. Located on a hill 200 meters above sea level, it provides stunning views of the Gulf of Hammamet and other surrounding areas. The site was created by Muslim refugees fleeing Spain in the 17th century and was a stronghold for Axis forces during WWII until New Zealand soldiers removed them. Next, visit Zriba el Alya, an ancient Imazighen village located between two tall peaks. Return to Hammamet for dinner and to spend the night.

Day 3

After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll head to the airport for a short flight from Tunis to Tozeur. Located in a large oasis famous for its palm trees and date production, Tozeur has beautiful views of the Sahara and traditional Tunisian culture. The Romans settled this oasis before the Amazigh tribes eventually settled here. After being transferred to your hotel, the afternoon is at your leisure. You can wander around the old quarter or take a carriage ride through the palm tree groves.

Day 4

This day will be full of thrilling adventures! You’ll be heading to the mountain oases of Tamerza, Chebika, and Mides. Not one of these locations is like the other, and all are magnificent. Enjoy lunch at the cozy Chez Mounir, a local establishment not often visited by tourists. The menu varies day by day and is guaranteed to be delicious. The evening is at your leisure to relax or explore more of Tozeur.

Day 5

Begin today with a camel ride in Douz. Known as the gateway to the Sahara, Douz is the ultimate palm oasis with stunning views of the vast desert. Next, head to the Imazighen village of Tamezret. This small town consists of crumbling stone buildings that mimic their surroundings. It is almost hard to spot them on the horizon. You’ll then make your way to Matmata. Made famous by the Star Wars movies, the underground dwellings here are an impressive location. Building homes underground has been a practice by Imazighen for many years as a great way to escape the heat. Tonight, stay at L’Auberge de Tamezret, a traditional home that has been transformed into a lovely guesthouse.

Day 6

This morning you’ll journey to the Imazighen hill village of Chenini. It is one of the most well-known in the area and the drive there is exceptionally scenic with many small hills and turns. The town is composed of mud-brick houses positioned on the slope leading up to a stunning white mosque. After lunch, you’ll visit another Star Wars filming location, Ksar Ouled Sultan. The structures here were built by the Imazighen entirely out of dry mud. They were constructed as protection from raids and have also survived the extreme climates since the 15th century. This afternoon travel to the beautiful island of Djerba.

Day 7

Today explore the beautiful island of Djerba. Begin at the Guellala Museum. Here you’ll find many exhibits rich in Djerba history. Spend the rest of the day exploring the island’s highlights, including the Ghriba synagogue, local markets, and handicraft shops. Enjoy dinner on the town or at your hotel.

Day 8

This morning marks the end of your Tunisian journey through the Tunisia’s history. Have breakfast at your hotel before being transferred to Djerba airport for your flight home.
